Privacy and Retention of Records

FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulates the privacy and disclosure of student education records. The Office of Accessibility and Accommodation (OAA) treats all disability-related documentation and student records in accordance with state laws and FERPA.

How Your Information is Shared

Under FERPA, disability records and documentation are handled confidentially. Information may be released to a school official who has a legitimate educational need to know (such as coordinating approved accommodations) and by student request.

Bringing a Guest to Your Meeting

If you would like to have support at your OAA meetings, you are welcome to bring a guest—such as a parent, guardian, friend, or advocate. Because confidential information may be discussed during these meetings, FERPA requires your written consent before a third party can attend.

If you plan to bring a guest, please complete, sign, and email the Guest Authorization Form from your university email account prior to your meeting.

Record Retention

Disability documentation and related records are securely retained by OAA for five (5) years from the last point of contact regarding the student.
