Your Rights and Responsibilities

The Office of Accessibility and Accommodation provides support to faculty and staff.
Therefore we hope this serves as a guide to your rights and responsibilities when
working with students with disabilities.

Rights

• Expect all students to adhere to the student code of conduct
• Deny accommodations if the Letter of Accommodation is not provided, current, or initialed by a Office of Accessibility and Accommodation counselor
• Contact Office of Accessibility and Accommodation staff with concerns or questions regarding approved accommodations
• Consult Office of Accessibility and Accommodation if accommodations appear to alter core requirements of the course

Responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality regarding students who have disabilities
• Include an ADA statement on syllabi
• Refer students who report a disability to the Office of Accessibility and Accommodation
• Collaborate with Office of Accessibility and Accommodation staff to ensure student accommodations
• Provide accommodations when an accommodation letter has been received
• Maintain a non-biased tone in classroom; avoid comments or humor about disabilities that may be perceived as derisive
• Use a Universal Design approach to teaching coursework when possible

Sample ADA statement

If you have a disability that qualifies you for academic accommodations, please provide a letter of accommodation from the Office of Accessibility and Accommodation in the beginning of the semester. For more information regarding accommodations, please contact the Office of Accessibility and Accommodation at 704‑687‑4355 or stop by their office in Fretwell 230.”
